Sunday Folks

After my one week trip to Bangkok, Hong Kong and Macau in August this year, I went back to work and one of my colleague suggested going to the newly opened cafe located at near our office. After she mentioned the name of the cafe, it rang a bell as I see many of my friends posting the pictures of the waffles in instagram. This cafe is the sister joint of Creamier, which explains why it is so popular ever since it opened! We were postponing the tea date for two weeks before we finally went in September.

Our working hours are in NZ/AU timing so we finish work early naturally. On that day, we knock off at 3:30pm and arrived there at 3:55pm. We were surprised that there were already a long line up as seen in the pictures. The cafe only opens at 4pm so people were already queuing up so that they can get the seats. Most of the customers were Secondary school students as it was still early. When the door of the cafe was finally open, the line was dispersed immediately. Everyone was looking for a place to sit. Thank goodness Lydia managed to grab us a table with two seats. We left our bags there and line up at the counter once again to order our food. The decor of the cafe is relatively simple. The music that was constantly playing was very loud though. Lydia and I felt like we needed to shout as we talk. The chairs are ordinary and not as comfortable as other bigger cafes so do not get your hopes too high. Realistically, this cafe is catered for the food and not for your comfort level. It is not those cafes, whereby you can relax and chill at. Many customers who are waiting will be standing at the back of your table staring at you and waiting for you to leave. As you can see, there are a small handful of cakes served at Sunday Folks. There is also a variety of novel toppings for the waffles and ice cream . The server did not leave an impression on me, probably because they were busy.

The Japanese Matcha Cake that we ordered arrived first since that item do not need much preparations. It costs SGD$7.90, which is rather reasonable as compared to PODI. Although the Japanese Matcha Cake is stated to comprise of white chocolate, I could not taste it at all, which is a good sign because I prefer the taste of matcha itself. The matcha cake is topped with kinako, which is basically roasted soybean flour. Thankfully, it was not too much so it gives this Japanese Matcha Cake a rather mild taste.

The next item that came was a charcoal waffle cone topped with Earl Grey Lavender soft served ice-cream , nut candy and honeycomb cereals. Once I tried this set, I went to ice-cream heaven and back. I prefer gelato to ice-cream but I am a sucker for this combination. Everything blended very well together. It has a crunchy texture, thanks to the waffle cone, cereals and nut candy. The ice-cream is also very light and smooth, which helped to balanced the texture of the other items. It costs SGD$7.20 but I prefer this to the waffles/ice-cream combination.

Everyone’s favourite food item would probably be the waffles topped with charcoal waffle cone as the base of the soft-served ice-cream of your choice. It is decorated exactly the same as Creamier’s waffle/ice-cream combination with strawberries, blueberries, chocolate sauce and maple syrup. Like I mentioned in my previous entry, I love the firmness, fluffiness and crispiness of the waffles. I actually prefer their signature soft-served ice-cream to their handcrafted ice-cream but both Lydia and I did not like the taste of the Sea Salt Gula Melaka as firstly, it melts even faster than the Earl Grey Lavender. This is probably due to the heat from the waffles. Secondly, we could only taste the sea salt flavour from the ice-cream but not the Gula Melaka. It is such a pity that we could not finish this as it costs the most out of the three that we have ordered – SGD$11.80.

Instead of everyone else who is raving about the waffles, I highly recommend the Charcoal Waffle Cone topped with soft-served ice-cream and crunchy bits.
