Remboelan

As my grandparents came to Indonesia during the Japanese Occupations, my dad and his siblings were born in Jakarta. However, I stayed in Singapore practically my entire life before studying in Vancouver. Thus, I have a language barrier whenever I head over to Indonesia. I only started learning the language when I hung out with Indonesians in Vancouver and took care of my uncle at Los Angeles. I guess that is the best way to pick up the language eh? So long story short, I started going to Jakarta occasionally at the age of 15 and got to know parts of it as I go over more often. What I love about Jakarta is their delicacies, which tastes a lot better than the nonya delicacies in Singapore.

So on the third day of Lunar New Year, my fifth uncle brought my sister, my brother’s girlfriend and myself to Plaza Senayan before we head over to my third aunt’s house for dinner. Since we enjoy trying the local food in the country we visit, my fifth uncle brought us to Remboelan  for desserts. If you are feeling hot from having street food in Jakarta, you can always make yourself at home and have traditional food at the elegant & beautiful Remboelan. I was amazed that even the Javanese desserts were the signature dishes. We decided to order a variety of desserts to share but we did not realized that it kept us so full even when we arrived at our aunt’s home. The third picture features Rondo Royal, which is basically deep fried fermented cassava served with gula jawa. Needless to say, the forth picture is Ondeh Ondeh. The sixth picture depicts Colenak, which consists of grilled fermented cassava topped with mixed gula jawa and shredded coconut. Next, we had Pisang Bakar Remboelan as shown in the seventh picture. This dessert comprises of grilled banana topped with chocolate, cheese & condensed milk. Each of these desserts cost 23,000 Rupiah. We wanted to try the watery desserts as well so we shared the Es Cendol Tape, Aneka Bubur Remboelan and Lychee desserts as depicted on the eighth, ninth and last picture. In case you do not know, the Es Cendol Tape is made up of shredded ice with cendol, fermented cassava, jackfruit, coconut milk and gula jawa. On the other hand, the Aneka Burbur Remboelan is one of the traditional Javanese desserts. Both cost 27,000 Rupiah and 25,000 Rupiah respectively. Did I say how much more I prefer the desserts at Indonesia as compared to the nonya ones at Singapore? It is because some of the nonya desserts are way too sweet in Singaporeas it is topped with lots of unnecessary syrup. However, if you find a good one at Jakarta, you will never get sick of the taste.
