328 laksa

I have tried laksa at Honolulu cafe in Vancouver and the soup and vermicelli are disgusting. As for Bo Laksa, the laksa is good but a little salty for my liking. So I could not find a perfect substitute for laksa in Vancouver. When I came back from Vancouver, I have been wanting to eat Katong Laksa but I did not have the chance to until the end of September. My business associate wanted to try the local delights in Singapore when he came oevr for two weeks so I brought him to 328 Laksa, which is probably the best laksa at Katong (as claimed by the shop owners nearby).

328 Katong Laksa has an air-conditional enclosed store on it’s own for customers to sit in. They have another area for the waiter to go over to collect the food and serve it to us. The place is filled with lots of pictures of famous artists visiting. I really like how Singaporean food places are very well-organized, neat and decorative. The only thing that needs to be improved is the server’s attitude.

1st & 2nd pictures – Both of us had an otah each, which cost $1 per pax. For people who do not know what otah is, it is a traditional food from the Peranakan origins. Fish meat is being wrapped by a thin slice of banana leaf and grilled over a charcoal fire. Thus, it has a smoky fish aroma. As I have not tasted otah for ages, I really enjoy eating this as it is soft, filled with fish fragrant and lots of flavorings. However, the otah at 328 Katong Laksa is only average.

3rd picture – What we came to 328 Katong Laksa for is obviously for their laksa! The small bowl costs SGD$4 so we decided to get that for each of us. Laksa also originated from the Peranakan culture. One good factor of consuming laksa at Katong is that they cut up their white noodles into smaller pieces so no chopsticks are needed. Instead, the meal can be eaten with just a spoon alone. The coconut-based curry soup is really thick and rich and I love it! The seafood such as the cockles and shrimps in the dish is really fresh and appetizing. The coriander and sambal chili brings out yummy flavorings to the dish as well.

In conclusion, I highly recommend 328 Katong Laksa solely for it’s laksa. I will be back to try their rojak soon!
