#44 dineout #4

Posted by swisscheese on February 9, 2011 in mediterranean cuisine, pasta, seafood |

it was already the last week of dine out and i only went for one dine out event at baru latino as previously mentioned. i was contemplating on provence mediterranean grill when vivi and annie invited me because i have been to provence marinaside at yaletown before so i wanted to try something new but i decided to go anyways.

comparing provence marinaside to mediterranean grill, the interior design of provence marinaside wins mediterranean grill HANDS DOWN ! that is for sure due to the number of high end restaurants in yaletown. the servers of provence mediterranean grill have so much more courtesy and grace than the ones at marinaside though. the ambiance is typical of a high end fine dining restaurant.

1) APPETIZERS
A. Shellfish a la Nage
” prawn, scallop, clams & mussels steamed with white wine, garlic, fennel & fresh tomatoes ”

i wouldn’t say that this dish is excellent because it is just average but i already know how the food taste like because i have ate there before. thus, i had no expectations and disappointments. just felt like the sauce was insufficient to enhance the tastes of the seafood but the seafood is fresh though.

ratings: 6/10★

p/s: aldh commented that the appetizer is way too small and he also gave a rating of 6/10★

B. Mixed Green Salad
” artichoke caponata crostini, dijon-balsamic emulsion “

mike was the only one who ordered the salad because greens is the direction towards healthiness ! he stated that the salad is just average but gave a rating of 7/10★

C. Soup du Jour

kent and a few others had the soup but i have no idea on their comments because i have yet to ask them.

2) ENTREE
A. Pan-Roasted Sablefish
” vegetable ragout, fingerling potato, caper beurre rouge “

i felt so mad with myself for taking pictures of other people’s entree but not my own and the worst thing is i was the only one who ordered this dish so no one else could have snap a shot of it. i really found that the sable fish leaves a unique palate and it is soft and has a rich, velvety taste. vivi commented that my entree is her favorite !

ratings: 7.5/10★

B. Wild Mushroom Ravioli
” fresh tomato, garlic, white wine, butter and basil ”

mike had this dish and he found the ravioli tastes good due to it’s creaminess. he gave a rating of 7.5/10★

C. Grilled Beef Tenderloin
” vegetable ragout, fingerling potato, classic peppercorn sauce or West Coast Bouillabaise served with gruyere et la rouille “

vivi and a few others had the beef tenderloin. vivi asked for medium rare but as usual, the typical dine out restaurants serve us well-done beef tenderloin. how unfortunate !

D. Bouillabaisse
” West Coast style with fresh fish, prawns, scallops, mussels, clams, served with gruyère et la rouille “

aldh stated that the bouillabaisse is just the bigger version of our appetizer, shellfish a la nage. he commented that the sauce does not have much of a taste so it all goes back to just the freshness of the seafood. though the seafood is fresh, aldh is only giving it a rating of 6.5/10★

3) DESSERTS
Pear Capadano
” served warm with vanilla gelato & candied walnuts “

although many people adore the mouth-watering dessert, i was already disgusted by it when the gelato has melted the minute it was served to me. that is one factor that can already spoil my mood for desserts. i got to admit that the capadano is tastes heavenly, especially with the complement of the walnuts.

ratings: 6/10★

p/s: aldh gave a rating of 7.5/10★ while mike gave a rating of 7/10★ as he found that the dessert does not leave much of an impression even though it is good.

THE BILL

the bill came up to a total of CAN$444.60, resulting in an amount of CAN$49.40 per person. since we had more than 6 people, we had to pay a mandatory 18% gratitude fee so the amount already included tips and tax.

PAYMENT METHODS: DEBIT/CREDIT/CASH

mike’s overall ratings are as follows:

ambiance: 8/10 (can accomodate to large groups)
service: 8/10
food (taste & appearance): 7.17/10

total: 7.73/10★

aldh’s overall ratings are as follows:

ambiance: 7/10
service: 7/10
food (taste & appearance): 6.67/10

total: 6.89/10★

aldh’s concluded that the food is not value for money although he found the highlight to be something that is free of charge – the delicious unique bread.

my overall ratings are as follows:

ambiance: 7/10
service: 8/10
food (taste & appearance): 6.5/10
value: 5.5/10

total: 6.75/10★

in conclusion, provence mediterranean grill is an average fine dining restaurant that serve food that is overrated.
