everyone thought that living around my neighborhood is boring since our house is in the middle of nowhere. i am very blessed to be living near many restaurants along main street and fraser street though. one of the aforementioned restaurant that is a good find is ” pinpin “, which is just a few streets away.

pinpin was introduced to me by my sister. out of the five times i ate there, i dine there four times with my sister. i have never tried filipino food in my life until i first step into pinpin. my sister and i have seen pinpin expand their restaurant. it was previously a small restaurant but now they even have a small private function area for customers who want to host an event or to cater a large group of people. the waitresses are very busy, especially during peak hours so it is pretty hard getting them to take photos of us or whatsoever. another unfortunate fact is the waitresses will give us the bill right after we are done with our meals if the restaurant is filled to the brim.

visit #1

lomi – CAN$5.50

the first visit to pinpin was with my sister. we had filipino chinese food – lomi and lumpiang sariwa (CAN$3.95)  (no pictures though)

lomi is basically egg noodles with shrimps in thick soup. it is practically like ” lor mee ” served in singapore but the soup in pinpin has lesser MSG taste. i’m a fan of egg noodles and thick soup so i do crave for the soup at times due to it’s thickness.

lumpiang sariwa is vegetables wrapped with eggs and topped with nuts and garlic brown sauce. it is primarily like ” popiah ” served in singapore except that the brown sauce for lumpiang sariwa is sweeter than popiah in singapore. in fact, it is derived from the original chinese popiah.

do you know ? lumpia in general was brought by the chinese immigrants from the fujian province of china when they settled in the philippines ?

visit #2

it was my sister’s birthday last year and there were long lineups so we waited for about half an hour before getting in. at that period of time, the restaurant was still very small. there were 5 of us but 3 dishes and 2 desserts made us really full. the total bill came up to CAN$45+.

inihaw na pusit
small – CAN$9.50

this grilled squid is so flavorful. it has soy sauce, garlic, ginger, brown sugar and a tinge of honey taste. i like the pusit sisig better though.

rating: 3/5★

pusit sisig – CAN$10.95

pusit sisig is diced spicy squid served on a sizzling plate. it has spring onions, regular onions, chili, green and red pepper and lemon. this dish topped my list of pinpin’s dishes because it is sugar, spice and everything nice !

rating: 4.25/5★

pancit palapok – CAN$8.95

this dish consist of round rice noodles with hard-boiled eggs, tofu and shrimps topped with tinapa flakes and minced green onions and filled with a thick sauce. i usually have noodles and something moist when i dine out so this dish is absolutely mouth-watering for me.

rating: 3.25/5★

banana ala mode – CAN$6.95

here comes the desserts .. banana ala mode is banana crepe with a scoop of ice-cream on top. it is nicely decorated with chocolate sauce and a cherry is placed on top of the ice-cream to complete the dessert set. truly gratifying !

rating: 4/5★

cassava cake – CAN$3.95

well, the cassava cake over here taste a little drier than the one at goldilocks. the taste is just like any other delicious south-east asian sticky cakes filled with coconuts. the portion is pretty huge considering the price.

visit #3

i went to pinpin for the third time during my birthday this year. i was really shock to find pinpin becoming so much bigger and more spacious after their renovations. they even had a waiting room and private function room. there were four of us and we had the following dishes:

bopis – CAN$7.95
rating: 2.8/5★

dinuguan – CAN$7.95
rating: 3.5/5★

java rice (large) – CAN$5.95

pancit miki bihon – CAN$8.95
rating: 4/5★

all the dishes are truly native filipino dishes except for pancit miki bihon. bopis consisted of a combination of beef lungs and heart in brown sauce. dinuguan is pork meat in pork blood stew. it is a savory stew and an unusual dish for many people. both bopis and dinuguan have distinctive tastes. when arya ate both bopis and dinuguan, he swore never to come back to pinpin again. i prefer dinuguan over bopis as it is more tasty. bopis has a more nasty taste to it but it’s still not that bad as what people claim.  the pancit miki bihon we had is vegetables with egg and rice noodles. this dish resembles ” hokkien mee ” a little. the dish is appetizing due to the amount of oil used.

visit #4

my sister and i happened to be around that area last friday morning so we went in for brunch. i am currently on crutches but there were lots of empty seats so it was easy for me to move around. the waitresses were also very careful at the area where my leg was at.

tapsilog – CAN$7.95

tap-si-log consisted of beef jerky served with garlic rice and sunny-side up egg. i would have to say that the beef jerky tastes awfully good although it is pretty burnt and consists of carcinogens. however, it is too salty and dry. i love trying different kinds of rice. the java rice and garlic rice are the trademarks of the filipino cuisine.

rating: 2.8/5★

cha-mi – CAN$8.95

cha-mi is a hokkien-style noodle served with vegetables in brown sauce. it tastes like lomi actually but it is just drier. i prefer lomi over cha-mi though.

rating: 3/5★

visit #5

jny was asking me which filipino restaurant i went with my sister so i introduced pinpin to her and she called the rest of the church members to the restaurant. there were about 24 of us and so, we were placed in the private function area. the waitresses were very impatient when a few of our members have not come yet.

crispy pata
medium – CAN$10.95

we were tongue-tied when we saw how huge the crispy pata is. it is deep fried pork hocks and it reminds me of the times my mother used to buy this to offer to the ancestors when we were buddhists.  it was enjoyable consuming that but we were so full from the many huge dishes that we gave most of it to the guys.

rating: 4.5/5★

sitaw at kalabasa sa gaya – CAN$8.95

i am grateful that tante monica reminded us to order vegetables because i have yet to try any filipino vegetable dishes. this dish consisted of string beans and squash in coconut milk. it looks so ordinary but is a scrumptious dish !! the squash was soft and i like how it melts in my mouth, along with the taste of coconut milk.

rating: 4.75/5★

ate lomi and inihaw na pusit again so no further reviews needed for it.

food (taste & appearance): 7.01/10
value: 8.5/10

total: 7.25/10★

in conclusion, pinpin is one of the best filipino restaurants in town. (tried goto king & cucina manilla but the ambiance and other settings cannot beat pinpin)
Pinpin on Urbanspoon

more filipino restaurants to come, watch this space ^^
