#482 Mr Holmes Bakehouse @ Larkin, San Francisco

Posted by swisscheese on November 24, 2017 in cornflake cookie, croissant, cruffins, donuts, kouign amann, san francisco |

When I went to Seoul back in April, I was introduced to Mr Holmes Bakehouse. Since Mr Holmes Bakehouse originated from San Francisco, I had to go to the shop at SF to see how the original store looks like during my trip mid last month. When I googled and checked on the location of the bakery, it was a 15 minutes walk from my hotel fortunately. So out of the 4 days I had at San Francisco, I went there to get pastries twice in the morning.

When I was turning right from Geary Street and Larkin Street and while walking up the hill towards Mr. Holmes, I was surprised upon passing Post Street as there was a long line up for Mr. Holmes. While I was standing in line , there were two girls in front of me chatting among themselves. Then, their friend came with a box informing them that she has already bought the cruffins and they should take a photo with the neon iconic sign after purchasing the rest of the goodies that her two friends were standing in line for. This was when I realised that there was another lineup at the other side of the entrance and that lineup is only meant for buying cruffins. As for the line I was in, it was to purchase beverages and the rest of the pastries excluding the cruffins.

During my first trip to Mr Holmes Bakehouse, I purchased 2 pomegranate brioche donuts, 2 lemon brioche donuts, 1 regular croissant and 1 churros croissant for USD$21.50 (SGD$28.98 / CAD$27.31) and managed to take the last 2 chocolate cruffins from the cruffins tray for USD$9.00 (SGD$12.13 / CAD$11.43). If you take a look at my video, I love the lemon brioche donuts as it gives a tarty taste so that the donut will not be too sweet since it is already sugar coated. My grandma and aunt love the regular croissant since  it has a neutral taste and it is flaky enough. The pomegranate donut was a little too sweet for my aunt’s liking but everyone enjoys the cruffins the most! The cruffin is a mix of everything, just like a flaky croissant in the shape of a muffin filled with flavoured cream in the inside and sugar coated on the outside like a donut. My cousin mentioned that it gives a very confusing yet unique taste as it is a bit of everything mixed together. Well, I personally love the cruffins served in SF way more than Seoul but you have to be there early by 8:45am to queue as the cruffin trays are only out at 9am and by 9:30am, all the cruffins are wiped out!

Although I did not managed to get the cruffins on my second trip to Mr Holmes Bakehouse since the cruffins are only out at 9am and we were there at 7:30am, I bought 1 guava ginger brioche donut, 1 chestnut brioche donut, 1 matcha croissant, 1 regular croissant 1 koulgn amann and 1 cornflake cookie before my flight to Vegas. You can refer to my above video to view how each pastry bought looks like! I love how refreshing the chestnut donut is and yet it is not too sweet, which is an important contributor to how a donut should be. As for the guava ginger donut, the guava flavour adds the sweet factor into the donut and combined with the explosive yet not too pungent flavourings of the ginger, you got yourself another unique tasting donut that is gratifying to the taste buds! The cornflake cookie seems to be a hit as well due to it’s crunchiness. For me, the matcha croissant fared average. The koulgn amann was eaten by my aunt at the airport as she was starving and she enjoyed every bit of it. As seen in the last picture above, the total bill came up to USD$21.50 (SGD$28.98 / CAD$27.31) once again.

Opens daily: Weekdays: 7am – 2:30pm Weekends: 8am – 3:30pm

I couldn’t believe the calorie intake during my visit to Mr Holmes Bakehouse at San Francisco as I usually avoid and dislike donuts but imagine the amount of donuts and pastries I had during these two trips. This is how much I enjoyed my takeaways from there!
