CLEAN EATING #16 – Triple Layered Smoothie
Last Christmas (2013), I was so excited about the festive season despite being at UCLA hospital all the time. I kept wearing different Christmas head gears to cheer the patients up since two weeks prior to Christmas and I am glad that they LOVE it! I decided to make a triple layered smoothie for breakfast before joining my dearest friends in UCLA for Christmas lunch and having Christmas dinner with my favorite liver transplant coordinator at UCLA.
A. FIRST LAYER of the TRIPLE LAYERED SMOOTHIE
Recipe as follows:
- - 2 teaspoon of unsweetened cacao powder (use 1 teaspoon if you do not like the strong taste of cacao)
- - 2 tablespoon of organic almond butter
- - 1 tablespoon of rolled oats
- - 1/3 cup of almond milk
- - 1/2 banana
I topped the smoothie with strawberries and shredded coconut after inputting the blended mixture into the jar.
B. SECOND LAYER of the TRIPLE LAYERED SMOOTHIE
Recipe:
- - 1/4 banana
- - 1/4 cup of almond milk
- - 1/4 cup of greek yogurt
- - 1 tablespoon of pumpkin seeds
- - a handful of blueberries
C. THIRD LAYER of the TRIPLE LAYERED SMOOTHIE
Recipe:
- - 1 tablespoon of flaxseeds
- - 1/2 cup of strawberries
- - 1/3 cup of almond milk
- - 1/4 banana
TOPPINGS FOR THE SMOOTHIE
I was deciding how should I decorate the smoothie with and I decided to just top the smoothie with goji berries and shredded coconut.
TA-DAH!! There goes my final product!! No idea why the heart shape became so messy shortly after I made it using goji berries. Boohoo! As you can see from the pictures above, the layers in the smoothie is not very obvious. This is because I should put the denser mixture at the bottom of the jar and the more diluted mixtures on top to show the three layers effectively. As I said before, I love experimenting with food so it is never a failure if I make mistakes like that. As long as I learn and do not quit easily, I believe that the outcome can be better. The beverage also tastes good so I just have to work on the presentation.
So based on my analysis, I should put layer B on the bottom of the jar. After putting in the fridge for awhile, I should blend layer A and input it into the jar next. The last layer will be layer C after refrigerating it for a bit.
I have yet to elaborate about almond butter but I will do it soon! I have already tried making my own almond milk as there is no fresh almond milk in Singapore and the unsweetened almond milk sold in Singapore is in UHT form. Will explain about both almond butter and almond milk after experimenting my own almond butter.
