CLEAN EATING: Strawberry Smoothie Recipe

It is currently the new year but I am still very outdated in my postings as I have been so busy traveling during the first half of 2013 and taking care of a relative’s medical issue on the second half of 2013. I finally got back to Singapore at the stroke of midnight on New Year so I hope I finally stay put this time. One of my new year’s resolutions is definitely to continue with the clean eating lifestyle although I do have cheat days, especially on festivities! The amount of desserts input would definitely have to decrease, which calls for a clean eating recipe post.

As you can see from the above pictures, I layered the rolled oats with the smoothie. I added rolled oats and banana into the jar first and the smoothie after. Next, I layered it with another layer of banana and rolled oats before refilling more smoothie onto the jar. Wrapped things up by topping the smoothie with slices of bananas, blueberries, raspberries and cashew nuts.

The recipe of the smoothie itself is as follows:

  • a handful of blueberries and raspberries
  • 4 strawberries
  • a splash of unsweetened almond milk
  • 3 teaspoons of honey greek yogurt
  • 3 tablespoons of chia seeds
  • 2 tablespoons of psyllium husks

However, I found that this was a failed trail as there was not enough almond milk and the chia seeds was too much. The smoothie ended up rather thick and solidified and it was hard downing the entire drink, unlike the first smoothie I made at HERE. As you know, I love experimenting with food so here is the corrected recipe from my analysis:

  • a handful of blueberries and raspberries
  • 4 strawberries
  • 1/2-1 cup of unsweetened almond milk (there must always be enough milk to make a smooth drink!)
  • 1/2 cup of honey greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon of chia seeds
  • 1 tablespoon of psyllium husks

So a summary of why I added the above ingredients into my breakfast jar is because:

  • berries have high levels of antioxidants and boost brain function.
  • almond milk is high in cholesterol-lowering flavonoids and vitamin E.
  • yogurt helps to ease digestion by providing probiotics.
  • chia seeds is a natural appetite suppressant that consists of fiber and thus, make you feel full for a longer period of time.
  • psyllium husks can help cleanse the colon as it is a source of soluble dietary fiber.
  • cashew nuts comprises of copper, which is good for antioxidant defenses, energy production, blood vessels and bones.
  • rolled oats also helps with regular bowel movements.
  • banana increases seretonin levels and this helps to boosts the mood of the person consuming it. it also has vitamin B6, potassium and folic acid.

Hopefully, this inspires you and you will be willing to start a healthy lifestyle TODAY! This is NOT a diet by it is a lifestyle. I find that these clean eating food curbs my cravings for desserts so it is very satisfying that I do not avoid those delicious delicacies intentionally but naturally. Will be back to share more recipes in time to come!
