#485 On Lok Yun / ออน ล๊อก หยุ่น @ , Bangkok

Posted by swisscheese on January 1, 2018 in bangkok, french toasts, kaya toast |

I have been wanting to have breakfast at On Lok Yun ever since I saw so many instagram pictures about it. However, I was not able to make time whenever I pay Bangkok a visit. Ironically, Elynn, Sui Qian and I made time to consume our breakfast there during our weekend trip last May. I tried checking google map and researching where was the nearest BTS / MRT station to this coffee shop but there seems to be none so the best mode of transportation is via taxi, grab or uber. Since we were intending to pay The Grand Palace a visit and On Lok Yun is around the area where the temples are located at, we decided to go there on the last day of our trip.

On Lok Yun is an old school eatery, which resembles Singapore’s Chin Mee Chin store that specializes in authentic kaya toast, old fashioned cakes and coffee roasted in charcoal. We arrived there via Grab at around 10 am and most tables were filled with with early birds ready to dig in! Knowing that we are not Thai, the owner and servers gave us their English menu and we shared a bowl of Soft-Boiled EggsFrench Toast in small serving size,  Bread with Butter & Sugar and Egg Custard Bread. I enjoyed the Bread with Butter & Sugar and Egg Custard Kaya Bread the most as the French Toast is too oily for my liking and it tastes like bread wrapped by egg instead of the usual Western French Toast. I have no idea why people mention that the bread is very soft but it tastes just like the usual bread as I believe that nothing was done to it except that it was taken out from the bread package. What I love is the Egg Custard Kaya sauce though! Everything else is pretty much average and do not to require the time and effort to fly over for breakfast if it is not on the way. The entire order including 1 cup of milk tea costs 134 THB (USD$4.12 / SGD$5.51 / CAD$5.18), which is relatively cheap as compared to Singapore since there are so many bread served via different cooking methods.

Ambiance: 8.5/10

Food (taste & appearance): 6.5/10

Total: 7.25/10★

I would consider the food served at On Lok Yun to be comfort food but not the kind of eatery to take the extra mile for if you are not going that direction.
