#1 macaroon madness

Posted by swisscheese on March 7, 2010 in italian cuisine, macaroons, vancouver |

the lack of sleep due to editing my sister’s long awaited video & creating this official food blog of mine have made me hungry easily these days. but i always want desserts after my meals. some people love sweet delicacies and i am no exception ! macaroons shall be the first in my to-write-list.

the best macaroons can be found in italy, for sure but vancouver has sold decent ones as well. last year for my birthday, i got the macaroons (1st picture from left) from

saint german bakery
Unit 140, Oakridge Centre, 650 West 41st Ave.
Vancouver, B.C. V5Z 2M9
Tel: (604) 267-0807

it is a chinese bakery that sells decent cakes but i can’t say the same for their macaroons. the texture is pretty rough, more like a biscuit than a macaroon. in addition to that,  the taste is so different from the usual macaroon. it claims to be ” gluten free ” so that maybe a contributing factor to the lack of taste and rough texture.

the price for 1 dozen is CAN$11, 2 dozens is CAN$21 & 4 dozens is CAN$41.

is it within your budget ? is it worth the price for non-authentic macaroons ? YOUR CHOICE !

as for me, i’ll give them 1/5 SOLELY for their macaroons.

on the other hand, i went to thomas haas. they have 2 branches:

North Shore Store:
Unit 128, 998 Harbourside Drive, North Vancouver, BC, V7P 3T2
Phone: 604-924-1847   Fax: 604-904-7479

Kitsilano Store:
2539 West Broadway Avenue, Vancouver, BC  V6K 2E9
Phone: 604-736-1848   Fax: 604-736-1844
Underground parking available

i used to go to the one in north vancouver plenty of times as it was directly opposite my high school. it had a nicer ambiance than the one at kitsilano. it gave a cozy feeling while the one at kitsilano seems more commercialized. anyhows, i am only giving review about the macaroon. the macaroons sold in ” thomas haas ” are FRESHER and more authentic than ” saint german bakery “. the macaroons are way more smooth, more like ordinary macaroons. it is fine if you gobble one down. however, if you have more than 2 macaroons at one go, it will be a tad too sweet for some. of course macaroons aren’t their specialties so i’ll give them some credit for making decent macaroons.

the price for prepacked macaroons of 4 are about CAN$5++. if you want to choose individual ones, it is about CAN$1+.

as for me, i’ll give them 3/5 SOLELY for their macaroons.

i will continue my food adventure in finding new places that sell or specialize in macaroons.

will be back to review other finger-licking good food so stay tuned !
