On my solo trip last month, I spontaneously decided to go to Or Tor Kor Market on my second day at Bangkok so I took the MRT train there from Siloam.

Unlike your usual traditional wet market, Or Tor Kor is an upscale market that is way cleaner. The floors are not slippery and it does not have any smell as well. The market sells a variety of items, ranging from fresh grocer, clothes, souvenirs, packaged delicacies and cooked food.

I was spoilt for choices initially because there were so much food to choose from. The market even had a dining area for people to consume the cooked food that they have bought. It is such a pity that all I had eaten was just the above – ผัดไทย / Pad Thai cooked on a sizzling pan. It is worth 50 baht (USD$1.55 / CAD$1.71 / SGD$1.96) and for such a simple and cheap dish, it still takes you to Pad Thai heaven and back. As I was eating clean food most of the time in Singapore, when I went to Bangkok, my stomach could not take the street food there. Hence, I was worried when I saw some food laying around in the open while flies are seeking refuge on it and decided against consuming there. It took me awhile before I made my decision to have this pad thai that was openly cooked in front of you. I did not dare to consume the shrimps for fear that I would have to make another trip to the washroom. True enough, even without eating the shrimps, I still had to run to the washroom after that! The washroom is a 1 minute walk from Or Tor Kor Market and surprisingly, it is quite clean for a developing country. However, you have to pay a few baht to enter the restroom and another few bahts for the tissue as they had none inside. I felt so much better after my toilet trip. However, I still felt uncomfortable so I decided to leave the market with much regret and the story continues at ครัวดอกไม้ขาว / White Flower Factory.

As my tummy decided to act up on me, I really needed to leave the market earlier. I regretted not having the mango sticky rice, durian and many other delicious Thai food but I will in the future. You should too!
