Oyama Sushi

Janet and I had an impromptu movie date at Metrotown. Since we were watching Paranorman that is screening at 9pm, we decided to venture to Sushi Oyama for dinner.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane, shall we? Back in 1910, Sushi Oyama used to be named as “Glenedward”, a home for a native Norwegian by the name of  Andrew M. Johnson. The house is made with oak and walnut millwork and the windows are made of stained glass. After Johnson passed on in 1934, his wife decided to sell it to Charles Aitchison in 1943, who made the home into Royal Oak Funeral Home until 1981. After which, it made it’s transition through lots of failed restaurants but the place hit it’s mark with Sushi Oyama!

Now, let’s take you back to the present moment. So, Sushi Oyama is a 15 minutes walk from Metrotown skytrain station. Janet and I walked along kingsway to go there. Alternatively, you can take bus 106 to Oyama as well. You will never miss Sushi Oyama as the exterior looks like a beautiful heritage house. It is such a pleasant sight and it looks like a tourist spot. It is a huge restaurant that caters many customers and large groups of people. We had to wait for 10 minutes to be seated but the hostess and servers were very attentive and friendly. So, what’s there to complain?

We first ordered the small glass of sake (CAD$5.75). I am not a fan of hot alcoholic drinks so I only drank one cup of it. However, Janet loves sake but she felt sick after drinking a few cups of it. Thus, she decided to stop drinking the sake.

We decided to share the Spicy Salmon Sashimi (1st picture), Las Vegas Roll (2nd & 3rd pictures) and Black Dragon Roll (4th & 5th pictures). The items cost CAD$9.90, CAD$8.90 and CAD$10.90 respectively. The restaurant is very generous with the portion of food. The sashimi was very chewy and spicy and I enjoyed it! The Las Vegas Roll consists of  8 pieces of whole deep fried roll filled with spicy salmon, crab, cucumber, masago, cream cheese and bonito and topped with mayo. As for the Black Dragon Roll, it comprises of California Roll topped with eel, masago, tobiko bonito and mayo. I know that I have said this many times but I am going to say it again! As I just came back from Asia, I really enjoyed the freshness taste of the sashimis and sushis served in Vancouver. Some people might think that this place is overrated but at least, it is one of the few decent Japanese restaurants near Metrotown.

The total bill came up to CAD$39.70 and we topped up 15% for tips. Quite cheap for decent sushi and we even had leftovers because the serving size is huge!
