#18 hola !

Posted by swisscheese on July 20, 2010 in margaritas, mexican cuisine, tacos, vancouver |

i used to have a mexican roommate (mariana) back in bodwell high school. back then, i was so new to the western/latino culture so i always wondered how mexican cuisine is like since we always eat whatever that is served in the dorm. i tried all kinds of tacos and quesadillas from taco times and pendulum respectively. it was not until last summer that i tried a more authentic mexican cuisine at don guacamole. alejandra brought natalia & i there. the photos were not very clear so i will give a review of it the next time i pay don guacamole a visit.

just two weeks back, inez and jacky highly recommended me to pay las margaritas a visit since i wanted to roam around west 4th avenue. and so, kris drove janet & i there for dinner.

there are lots of parking spaces over at west 4th but the parking meters cost almost the same as the one in downtown. the exterior layout was pretty simple. i was amazed by the long lineups. we had to wait for about 20 minutes before we could get seats. it was a nice, sunny day and thus, we were lucky to get our seats outside instead of being stuffed in the bar. the waitress was very friendly and she gave us enough time to decide on our orders. after our meals, the waitress gave us the wrong bill twice though.

tortilla chips – FREE OF CHARGE !

we were served tortilla chips and salsa sauce immediately after being seated. it was crispy and warm and it tasted really good especially with the salsa sauce. the best thing was that it was free-of-charge !!

deluxe quesadilla – CAN$14.84
a large grilled flour tortilla filled with melted cheese, grilled chicken breast, sauteed vegetables and fresh cilantro. served with sour cream, salsa, black beans and house salad. “

the chicken breast did not taste fresh. it was pretty dry. the quesadilla, as a whole, taste fine though. it must be the works of the melted cheese and fresh cilantro. the house salad is very bland though. i have to admit that i do prefer chinese vegetables over western salads so it is very subjective. of course, i did not forget mentioning about mexican’s staple food, beans. i really love the starchy black beans served. it was the only thing i did not dread consuming. overall, i prefer ubc’s pendulum’s quesadilla over las margaritas !

ratings: 2.8/5★

enchilada de sonora – CAN$14.75
roasted beef, new mexico chiles, edam, cheddar and mozzarella cheese, wrapped in a flour tortilla and baked in amarilla sauce. topped with guacamole and sour cream. served with refried beans & mexican rice.

both janet & kris ordered this meal and i would very much like to trade with them when i had a bite of it. i think i have a strong fetish for carbohydrates. i absolutely love their refried beans and mexican rice. the wrapped flour tortilla was average though. can’t really give a rating for this as i only got a bite of it.

soho margarita – CAN$7.45
soho pernod, sauza gold tequila, pineapple and peach juice

i ordered this and i really like how saccharine this is despite the alcoholic content in it. i guess they put a decent amount of peach juice and pineapple in it. it was good having a glass of margaritas in the evening during stressful days like this.

ratings: 4/5★

jose cuervo margarita – CAN$8.25
jose cuervo gold, cointreau liqueur and fresh lemon & lime juice on the rocks in a salt rimmed glass.

janet ordered this margarita and like her, i didn’t quite fancy it. it wasn’t as sweet as mine. it could be due to the salted rimmed glass but she had a harder time finishing it.

ratings: 2.5/5★

PAYMENT METHODS: DEBIT/CREDIT/CASH

my overall ratings are as follows:

ambiance: 7.5/10 (a cool interior located in the trendy west 4th avenue)
service: 6.5/10 (patient but clumsy waitress)
food (taste & appearance): 6.2/10
value: 5.5/10 (a little pricey for decent food but what do you expect from restaurants @ west 4th ?)

total: 6.43/10★

in conclusion, las margaritas is an awesome but laidback place to chill and drink after a day at work !
