#230 Hida Takayama Ramen @ Robson Street, Downtown Vancouver
I was craving for Ramen Jinya’s Tonkotsu Black Ramen so badly but Marvin did not like Ramen Jinya and would prefer to go to Takayama Ramen instead because it is known to be a ramen place that serves ramen without the use of monosodium glutamate (MSG). So Marvin brought Ivany and I to Takayama Ramen for dinner.

I have never heard of Takayama Ramen before and am so surprised that such ramen place exists at the food court of Robson Market. It is located just a few steps away from the popular Santouka, Kintaro and Motomachi Ramen and not too far from Sanpachi and Benkei. Again, so many competitors so Takayama Ramen got to raise it’s standards! The owner, who is Japanese, is very genuine and polite! He implemented a loyalty card like Benkei – Consuming 10 bowls of ramen to get a free bowl of ramen so that we will come back for more.
Marvin ordered the Gyoza (1st & 2nd pictures) for us to share but I could not eat it because the ramen was served in such a big portion that I could not finish it. I got the White Sesame Ramen (3rd and 4th pictures) while both Ivany and Marvin each got the Miso Ramen (5th picture). It is quite a good deal as you can add noodles or lessen the amount of noodles for free! All of us added extra noodles but both Ivany and I could not even finish our food! The White Sesame Ramen is quite bland yet very salty. I guess not having any MSG causes the chef to add more salt into the ramen dish so as to make it flavourful? However, I enjoyed the thickness, aroma and flavour of the White Sesame Ramen’s broth. Marvin stated that he could taste the true Miso flavour since there is no MSG input in the broth.

Takayama Ramen could have been better without the use of a large dosage of salt. This would have defeated the purpose of not adding any MSG at all. Remember I missed out mentioning about Takayama Ramen in my previous entry when I talked about the ramen places in Vancouver? I guess it has got to raise it’s standard to beat the other highly raved ramen restaurants at Robson Street! Good job in not adding MSG though!
