Dutch Wooden Shoe Cafe

One fine day, Mich randomly wrote on my facebook profile and asked me to go to Dutch Wooden Shoe Cafe to hang out together. After about two weeks, we decided to make a date for it. We called Luki and Rebecca along as well!

It was raining that afternoon but it did not stop us from going over to the restaurant by public transport. As you can tell from the pictures above, the restaurant looks very tacky and homely. There are many glasses of different sizes and the walls are decorated with Dutch shoes, Holland posters and pictures of customers who have ate there before. It almost looks like a traditional old and cozy home. When we entered the restaurant, there was no hostess to help us get seated. We had to make ourselves feel at home. It was hard getting the server to take our orders as well.

Four of us ordered the following dishes: The Windmill (first picture) for both Luki and I, Boeren Pannekoek (second picture) for Mich, Cordon Bleu with two sunny side ups at the side (third and forth pictures) for Rebecca and Dutch Croquettes (fifth picture) and Poffertjes (sixth picture) to share. My pannekoek dish is depicted as a windmill with the toppings of my favorite spinach, tomato slices, grilled smoked sausage slices, melted edam cheese and sunny side up topped with Hollandaise sauce. It costs CAD$13.35 and for such a huge portion, it is quite affordable as compared to De Dutch. I remember Edwin Timothy’s Windmill Pannekoek at De Dutch costs CAD$16 and it is a lot plainer than the one I had at Dutch Wooden Shoe Cafe. It was crazy that all of us ordered our individual pannekoek and did not share it as the serving size is too big for me. I had to take the remaining pannekoek to go. It was good while it lasted though!

Mich loves her Boeren Pannekoek, which is made up of smoked sausage, hashbrows, two sunny side ups, ham and spek on top of a pannekoek with Hollandaise sauce at the side. Her dish costs CAD$14.25, which is still cheaper than the pannekoek served at De Dutch. Rebecca’s Cordon Bleu (CAD$12.95) has all the ingredients that she loves on it (think melted swiss cheese, lean meat slices and tomato slices topping the pannekoek) but is missing out on her two favorite sunny side ups! Thus, the additional side orders for it. The croquettes and poffertjes are the perfect appetizer and dessert to complete our meal at Dutch Wooden Shoe Cafe. It is definitely a FIRST trying the poffertjes and I really like having it for my dessert! Firstly, it is very light and spongy, which do not cause me to feel more bloated than I already am with my huge pannekoek serving size. Secondly, it is made with yeast and buckwheat flour, which makes it very fluffy. Thirdly, it is very small and you can easily engulf a single poffertjes on it’s own. Lastly, it melts in your mouth so easily!

P/S: People usually eat this for dinner but WE LOVE OUR BRUNCH. Also, the restaurant also offers Indonesian food such as Nasi Goreng (Fried Rice) and Bahmi Goreng (Fried Noodle) but we did not try it. Interesting heh? This is because Dutch previously colonized Indonesia so even Mich remembers growing up and having poffetjes too.

The damage in my pocket was only CAD$14.95, inclusive of tax and I topped 15% tips for that!
