big breakfast {special posting challenge}

FOODBUZZ DAILY SPECIAL POSTING CHALLENGE

just two days ago, it was many of my friends’ graduation ceremony.
boy was i excited for their accomplishment !
however, a small side of me was whispering
” it could have been me ”
IF i had more plannings, less semesters off & less slacking.
but oh well, i shall NOT dwell on regrets
BUT celebrate the special occasion of my dearest friends
by eating appertizing breakfast meals.

however, before i introduce my meals to you,

i would like to talk about ” Burton Induction Cooktop, Athena 6000 “.
this item inspired me on my entry today because it is good at cooking pancakes/eggs & other breakfast delicacies.
be sure that this cooks fast due to the induction cooking. it is safe for your children as there is no open flame.

as chefs state: ” With 9 temperature settings, 10 power levels and a 180-minute timer, it’s at home in a restaurant kitchen as well as your own. Can be used with cast-iron, carbon steel, enamel steel or magnetic stainless-steel cookware. Black with gray accents. ”

i went to abc country restaurant when i was still new in vancouver (back in 2006). the servers were very aware of our needs & they are very friendly. however, i warn you NEVER to go there with an empty stomach as the waiting time is soooo long ! it took 1 hour before our meals got ready.

revisited this restaurant again early this year & i must say the waiting time decreased drastically ! it only took 15 minutes before we finally got our meals so i totally recommend this restaurant for breakfast items !

strawberry waffle supreme
” Belgian waffle, strawberries & whipped cream “

i prefer the strawberries at abc country restaurant over the highly-raved iHop. it is sugar, spice & everything nice ! has a fresh feel instead of an artificial one. the waffle is crispy, which is something i’m in favour of !

ratings: 4/5★

traditional eggs benedict
” Two perfectly poached eggs on English muffin halves, premium smoked ham and creamy Hollandaise sauce “

i’ll never forget how awesome the taste of abc’s eggs benedicts are. which is why when i revisited the restaurant this year, i ordered this once again to relieve memories ! the eggs and cheese melts in your mouth, giving you an orgasm of all sorts. if you do not like too much of the egg&cheese flavor, the harshbrows cubes are there to neutralize the taste.

ratings: 4.5/5★

slider cheddar steakburgers
” Three bite sized Certified Angus Beef Canadian cheddar steakburgers, garnished with a sweet gherkin and served with our own sauce and skinny fries “

i was amazed by these three mini burgers (each with a story to tell) !! it was my bf’s meal and he commented that it was pretty good. i have no right to rate this because i ate only had a bite of it. oh, one good thing about it is we can have a choice of choosing either yam fries, hot fries, harshbrows or regular fries.

my overall ratings are as follows:

ambiance: 7/10 (family, country feeling)
service: 8.5/10 (flexibility of changing the side dish & waitresses that give off the family vibe)
food (taste & appearance): 8.5/10 (comfort food)
value: 9/10 (less than $15/meal – one meal: huge portion)

total: 8/10★

in conclusion, visit this restaurant for comfort food !

a&w
jakarta

i was suprised that a&w in indonesia had waffles with ice-cream because i can’t remember singapore’s previous a&w(s) ever having one  & i don’t see people in vancouver ordering it. love the ice-cream but the waffle is just regular. oh well, what do you expect from a&w, which is part of a macdonaldized society.

ratings: 2.5/5★

bino’s family restaurant

i first went to binos when i used to frequent dian’s crib. i really like their desserts but i find their savory food pretty standardized. the place also looks dirty and shabby, just like a diner you often see in television. the waitress is most often than not, the same person so i can pretty much guess it’s a family restaurant. the waitress tends to serve us immediately and refill our drinks regularly so i would say the service is constant and awesome.

daily special breakfast

the hotdog is regular but pretty salty for my tastebud. it maybe fine with others though because i’m not one who love salty food. i find the eggs low in quality too because it is too small in size. bet the owner is trying to save money. thus, buying small eggs over larger ones. love the harshbrows though !

ratings: 2/5 ★

waffles + cinnamon apple with whip cream

again, another waffle/pancake filling way better than the overly raved ihop. the cinnamon apple simply melts in your mouth instead of giving you an artificially sweet taste. i’m giving credit for it’s filling but the waffle is not as good as abc country restaurant.

ratings: 3.5/5★

cheesecake

the cheesecake was ordered by danny. he found it fine but the strawberry sauce was the EXACT same one as the one filled in the fried ice-cream i ordered. seriously, a budget family restaurant !

deep fried icecream – CAN$3.99

i really like the deep-fried crust of the ice-cream but again, it the budget restaurant didn’t really fry the ice-cream. instead, only the top layer had crust and the bottom layer lack it. this shows that they only put a scoop of ice-cream there and cover it with the crust, how cheap ! i did enjoy my dessert though

ratings: 2.8/5★

my overall ratings are as follows:

ambiance: 4/10 (don’t feel comfortable in this restaurant due to the shabby surroundings)
service: 7.5/10 (constant)
food (taste & appearance): 5.53/10 (just average. i only come here for desserts on casual days out)
value: 6/10 (what can i say ? inexpensive because the food is just the norm)

total: 5.75/10★

in conclusion, this is just a neighborhood restaurant with no special features.

i got to know about this family restaurant through my sister. it is just a 10 minutes walk away from my house. i really like how their menus are a little more exclusive from the other restaurants. they have so many different types of pancakes, french toasts & omelets. the waitress is a little moody though. it seems like she’s going through menopause or something. one moment, she’s all friendly and the next, she starts being rude and difficult.

french toast platter

i really found this dish to die for ! the sprinkled icing powder was just right for the oh-so-fine french toast. how nice to have the regular eggs and sausages in combination with the french toast too. so for early mornings, when in doubt of choosing between a savory and sweet meal, french toast platter might just be right for you !

ratings: 4.5/5★

greek pancake

i like how the chef have so many combination of fillings for different pancakes and french toasts. brown sugar, butter, syrup and the pancake is so saccharine, it attracts ants. however, i would only order this if i’m craving for solely sweet food because with 5 pancakes on hand, i’m not only full but also bored by the time i’m done with my 3rd or 4th pancake.

ratings: 3.5/5★

breakfast special

it was gigi’s meal. contrary to my opinion, she prefers binos over dockers and thinks that binos is more value for money than dockers.

[EDITED]

LAST UPDATED: 6TH DECEMBER 2010

my father was craving for pancakes  and since he didn’t wanna walk much, i decided to bring him to dockers – the nearby family restaurant.

i ordered the eggs benedict because i’ve been addicted to eggs benedict since the first time i ate it back in 2006. in case anyone doesn’t know what eggs benedict is, it is half of an english muffin with ham/bacon, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. according to wikipedia, hollandaise sauce is an emulsion of egg yolk and butter, usually seasoned with lemon juice, salt, and a little white pepper or cayenne pepper. i love the one that dockers serve as the egg literally melts in your mouth with the compliment of the hollandaise sauce. it’s the first time my brother tried the egg benedict too and he’s lovin’ every single bit of it !

ratings: 4/5★

my father ordered the pancake combo and he didn’t like the pancake as it is too hard. i felt so bad introducing the restaurant to my father because he has unreasonably high expectations of food. [/EDITED]

my overall ratings are as follows:

ambiance: 9/10 (comfortable vibe & convenient for people like me)
service: 5/10 (ever changing)
food (taste & appearance): 8/10 (my favorite restaurant in vancouver that caters to breakfast meals)
value: 6/10 ($8 to above $10/meal but the portion is pretty small)

total: 7/10★

in conclusion, i’m totally in favor of this restaurant for breakfast.

franklin brought me to the ihop at richmond. i was having high expectations for it even though franklin already commented that it wasn’t good. i was very disappointed when the waitress gave us our bill when we have yet to finish our meals.

strawberry crepe

this crepe was on promotion for only CAN$3.99 so i went to try it since i was already full from my dinner with lingna. i was NOT pleased with the food at all. it was too soft and i felt like it wasn’t cooked. i didn’t even finish eating the entire dish.

my overall ratings are as follows:

ambiance: 6.5/10 (pretty cozy)
service: 3.5/10 (rude waitresses who can’t wait for us to get out)
food (taste & appearance): 3/10 (undercooked)
value: 4/10 (CAN$3.99 for uncooked crepe – you get what you actually paid for, serves me right eh ?)

total: 4.25/10★

in conclusion, i’m blacklisting this ihop branch.

International House of Pancakes (#3 Road) on Urbanspoon

since restaurants always need second chances and it was of a different location, i decided to give ihop the benefit of doubt once again. my bf and i went there on a saturday morning. thus, it was pretty busy and we had to wait to get seated. our orders were even mixed up but the waitress was nice enough to give up the correct order after that. i was also shocked to realize that ihop had a variety of syrups such as blueberry, strawberry, old fashioned and many other types of syrups. how awesome is that ?

cinnamon apple pancake

i ordered this and i swear never to do so anymore. it tasted disgustingly artificial that i took the fillings out and just added the butter and the regular syrup to the pancake. also, even though ihop seems to be specialized in pancakes, there is nothing that sets it apart from other places that serves pancakes as well. oh well, maybe it should be called ” international house of syrups ” instead ?

ratings: 1.5/5★

chocolate chip pancakes
” four rich, chocolate batter pancakes filled with chocolate chips and topped with powdered sugar and whipped topping “

i tried this once but it was for take out and it tasted really bad. so i asked my bf not to order it. however, he ignored my suggestion and continued to make an order of it. guess what ? i should totally EAT MY WORDS because it was so much better than my cinnamon apple !! the chocolate really MELTS in your mouth. my bf enjoyed his meal VERY much.

ratings: 3/5 ★

part of the pancake combo

i would say the breakfast meal itself is just regular so nothing much to comment about it.
ratings: 2.5/5★

my overall ratings are as follows:

ambiance: 6.5/10 (same feeling i got at the richmond branch)
service: 7/10 (the waitress served us with a smile and cleared up her mistake immediately)
food (taste & appearance): 4.67/10 (not as good as i heard)
value: nil. (can’t remember the price)

total: 6.06/10★

in conclusion, i would suggest NEVER to do take outs and NEVER make an order on cinnamon apple pancake. also, do try the many exclusive syrups they have.

International House of Pancakes (Metrotown) on Urbanspoon

i came to this restaurant back in summer 2008 when i was having a vacation at montreal. the tour guide allowed us to go to any restaurants we desire and so marg and i went to this restaurant. the person serving us was a little impatient because we couldn’t speak french and their command of english wasn’t that good. the food didn’t take long to come though AND the food was AWESOME ! another plus point, heh ?

spinach omelet

i was very much satisfied with my spinach omelet because it tasted way better than dockers and there were lots of spinach in the omelet. i must say that the place is very generous with their fillings. the meal didn’t make me feel bloated but just right.

ratings: 4/5★

crispy pancakes

i would have to say marg’s meal tasted even better ! i should have ordered that instead ! her pancakes are so different from any other pancakes i’ve mentioned above. it’s more like a french crispy pancake with raisins in it in combination with bacons, potatoes and fruits. i wouldn’t find it mundane consuming it again and again.

ratings: 5/5★

my overall ratings are as follows:

ambiance: 6/10 (dim light – how contradicting with breakfast meals)
service: 5.5/10 (rude little miss waitress)
food (taste & appearance): 9/10 (i’m impressed with the unique french breakfast)
value: nil. (can’t remember the price)

total: 6.83/10★

in conclusion, you definitely GOT TO try out this restaurant at MONTREAL !!!
