동지 Doong Ji Korean Restaurant

It is funny how my BFFs and I never fail to have Korean food together whenever we reunite this year. Although I met them separately on different occasions, three of us only reunited twice this year but both times were at different Korean restaurants. The first time was at Supulae, while the second one was last Friday at 동지 Doong Ji.

We already had the date fixed to reunite after work last Friday but we had no clue on which Korean restaurants we would like to try out. Since three of us live in the East since birth, I suggested that we go to Doong Ji for dinner after seeing my SEA GAMES teammates head there for lunch. Crystal stated that she tried take outs from there before and it is quite decent and so, we went! We thought that many people will be partying out at town on a Friday night but little did we know that Doong Ji will be filled with customers! As Vivian was the first to reach at 7PM, the hostess only brought us in after we waited for 15-20 minutes. We were almost going to leave if they had not given us the tables that they cleaned after the previous customer and put the reserved sign on it. I found one of the Chinese hostess’ attitude a little atrocious because when I was asking how long the wait would be, she answered me saying “I’m not sure because they did not tell me when will they be done eating.” It was also not an easy task getting the attention of the server when we wanted to place our order or get them to snap a photo of us. The place however was adorable as it is decorated very well! As for the food, we shared 김밥 / Gimbap (3rd & 4th pictures), 잡채 / Jap Chae (5th picture), 순두부찌개 / Silken Tofu Soup (6th picture) and 해물파전 / Seafood Spring Onion Pancake (7th & 8th pictures), which cost SGD$7.90, SGD$15.50, SGD$11.50 & SGD$17 respectively. The server gave us a choice between spicy and regular Jap Chae so we chose the spicy one and we were surprised that although the Jap Chae tastes good, it was too spicy for both Vivian and myself to bear. We had to keep cleansing our palate with the Gimbap and Seafood Pancake so as to remove the spiciness from our mouth. Even though the tofu stew was spicy, it was still manageable. I found the food mediocre although I enjoyed gimbap the most. Perhaps, this is how much I miss gimbap! I had it so many times during my 32 days stay at Korea in 2013. Vivian and I were saying how time flies as it has been 3 years since we left Seoul. I do not usually order drinks whenever I dine out because I would rather waste my calories on food rather than beverages. However, I managed to try the Traditional Rice Juice (9th & 10th pictures), while Vivian had the Strawberry Rice Wine (11th picture), which she loves. I believe the Traditional Rice Juice was taken from the can but oh well, better than nothing, I guess? I regretted not trying it when I was in Seoul for so long! The drinks cost SGD$3.50 & SGD$5.90 respectively. The total cost is SGD$61.30 without GST & service charge but roughly SGD$69.90 inclusive of GST & tax. This is what you usually pay for foreign food in sunny Singapore but trust me, you pay more when you head over to Korean Restaurants such as Superstar K located at Tanjong Pagar.

OPENS DAILY: 11:30AM-2:30PM & 6-10PM

Although the Korean food served in Singapore is never quite the same as those served in Seoul, it really brings back memories for my BFFs and I as Crystal stayed there for about 3 months, I stayed there for 32 days, while Vivian went there a couple of times already. Please take us to Seoul again once MERS has subsided!
