Chicken Up 치킨업

I have been wanting to try the shaved ice desserts in Chicken Up for some time but never got a chance to because there are far too many restaurants and cafes to choose from in the 3 malls near Tampines MRT station. My BFF, Vivian and I met up on Friday to have dinner together. However, as I already had my homemade appetizer at the office prior to the meet up. Thus, after her dinner, we wanted to share desserts. “Chicken Up”, I thought. Vivian responded, “Why not?”

When we were first entered the restaurant, the server told us that there were no available seats in the indoor seating areas so we had to seat outside. The BFF and I were more than glad to be seated outside as the music inside is too loud so we cannot have our private conversations and such. We were quite annoyed that the servers do not pay much attention to their customers though. It was difficult getting their attention to place an order and get the bill. Moreover, when we had our initial bingsu, we were served with stainless steel utensils but when we had our second bingsu, we were served with platic utensils. How atrocious, really?

As for the ratings of the food, Vivian and I were choosing between Melon Bingsu and Watermelon Bingsu, which have 3 thumbs up and 2 thumbs up respectively. Since I have been viewing watermelon bingsu in many pictures, I decided on the latter instead of the former. Wrong choice though! Both Vivian and I found it tedious to have the watermelon bingsu as there were plenty of seeds in it. We had to take the trouble to keep spitting out the seeds every 5 seconds. Although the watermelon bingsu is served in half a small watermelon shell, the shaved ice was very little and it is very bland. We were so disappointed that we decided to order the Macha Bingsu to give Chicken Up a second chance on their bingsu. Ever heard of “Fool Me Once, Shame On You. Fool Me Twice, Shame On ME!”? Yes, that is how we felt when we had our second serving of bingsu. The macha flavour was so artificial that we could not even swallow it up. They were generous with the shaved ice this time but sadly, it is so bland without the condensed milk and red bean that even Vivian, who is not a fan of red bean and condensed milk started pouring it all over the shaved ice. We stopped consuming it after awhile since the taste of the macha flavour was too artificial. The only saving grace was the macha ice-cream, which I believe is not made by them. Both of us thought that these two desserts a waste of money and calories and swear off ordering any bingsu from Chicken Up.

OPENS DAILY: 11:00 – 23:00

Ambiance: 6/10
Service: 4/10
Food (taste & appearance): 3/10

Total: 3.88/10★

The shaved ice may look very appealing to many people but it is definitely not worth the cost and even the calories. I may head back to Chicken Up to try their signature chicken dishes in the future but definitely not their desserts. What a spoiler, really?
