Pala Adas

So while I was in Jakarta during Christmas last year, Any was so thoughtful as she was so keen to meet me even though the festive season is a busy one. After a long discussion between my cousin and her boyfriend, we finally  settled down at Pala Adas in PIK.

One of the most popular places to hang out at Jakarta is none other than PIK. You have famous restaurants with plenty of people willing to line up for Ikkudo Ramen, Sumoboo and Carnivore. Outside the main street of PIK lies Pala Adas, a fine restaurant with a lovely eclectric interior of intricate designs yet it still embraces a fusion between the Indonesian and Peranakan culture. It is not too elegant yet dressing smart casual to dine here is also a good option.

All of us shared everything that we have ordered (2nd picture) from Nasi Pandan Pala Adas (3rd picture), Bakwan Jagung (4th picture), Sate Pala Adas (5th picture), Gurame Matah (6th picture) to Iga Babi Tiga Rasa (7th-10th pictures). It costs Rp 8, Rp 20, Rp 30, Rp 82 and Rp 168 respectively. Pala Adas technically means nutmeg and aniseed. Thus, the dishes served here consist of a handful of these spices. It was interesting having pandan rice instead of the usual white rice or coconut rice. Although the corn fritters were spicy, it was a good dish to start with! Satays are one of the most famous dish in South-East Asia. However, I have never tried anything like Sate Pala Adas before! I’s basically beef skewers coated with spicy yet sweet coocnut flakes, which boost the ‘oomph’ factor of this restaurant. Be cautious while consuming the fried fish as it has lots of bones in it! Taking the time to take the tender meat out is worth it even though the fish is spicy when topped with the Balinese sambal sauce. One of the highlights of Pala Adas is definitely the Iga Babi Tiga Rasa! The plate comprises of pork ribs served with three different toppings and cooked in different ways, namely green chilli, sweet and spicy sauce and sweet soy sauce. Any loves the spicy pork ribs while I can only deal with the pork ribs with soy sauce. Although some of the food was relatively dry due to it’s frying methods, it was a good dinner nonetheless.
