CLEAN EATING #1 – Overnight Oats Berries Recipe

Clean Eating Guide by Lorna Jane

I know I have been relatively slow in reviewing restaurants but I have one last restaurant to review from Vancouver Fall 2012 before I move on to restaurants at Los Angeles in December 2012. BUT I want to also update my recent clean eating recipes so as to update everyone what I am currently up to. In this case, I will alternate blog entries between restaurant reviews and clean eating recipes and I hope you will truly enjoy it!

I first had interest in Nutrition when I was still studying in Singapore. I was taking Food & Nutrition class for my elective in Secondary School and I was always enthusiastic during class, practicals and even for projects. I wanted to major in Biotechnology in university but decided on Nutrition instead. However, in all my years in university, I have always been consuming a whole lot of junk food and desserts are my ultimate weakness. I always had the norm of having desserts after every meal and I can even eat ice-cream thrice a week! You have no idea how addicted I was to such sweet delicacies!

Thank goodness I started running awhile ago but the food madness still could not stop. After reading some clean eating blogs and Lorna Jane’s guide, I finally decided to START eating wholesome and healthy meals. Of course, there will be times that I still have my meals in restaurants due to family commitments or occasions but I am definitely trying hard so watch me!

Clean Eating Price Tag

I am currently in Los Angeles so I first bought all fruits from Ralph’s  and clean eating ingredients from Trader Joe’s across my home at Westwood. I spent a total of USD$10.99 on blueberries, strawberries and raspberries in Ralph’s and USD$32.44 on the other natural ingredients. They say that clean eating is really expensive but the benefits definitely outweigh the price so do not put a price tag on clean eating.

It was my first time trying almond milk in any particular drinks but with all the ingredients blended together, I do not know the real taste of it. Taste of the individual ingredients did not matter since I will only be tasting the final results. I am changing my lifestyle for nutritional purpose so here are some benefits of the items I chose. Rolled oats add fiber to the beverage so it keeps you full. I find this very true and I did not have any dessert cravings after consuming the drink too. Greek yogurt and almond milk add texture to the drink and not only that, it has nutritional benefits too. Greek yogurt is a good source of protein and calcium while the almond milk has a good amount of calcium, vitamin D and vitamin E. You can get your Omega-3 fatty acids and fiber from chia seeds. Everyone else knows that fruits are good for your health and it adds natural sweetness to the drinks as well. Strawberries is loaded with vitamin C, potassium, fiber, folate and antioxidants, which can combat free radicals and make your skin glow.

RECIPE OF OVERNIGHT OATS BERRIES:

  • 1/2 cup of rolled oats
(Can substitute to steel-cut oats or any kinds of oats if you like)
  • 1/2 cup of unsweetened almond milk
(Can substitute to unsweetened rice milk or soy milk if you like)
  • 1/2 cup of honey greek yogurt
(Can substitute to plain greek yogurt if you want. I will definitely switch to plain greek yogurt after finishing this bottle)
  • 1/2 bananas (mashed)
  • A handful of frozen blueberries and fresh strawberries
  • 1 teaspoon of chia seeds
    Toppings:
  • 7 fresh raspberries
  • Rolled oats
  • Sweetened shredded coconut
(Can substitute to unsweetened shredded coconut. bought the sweetened one because Trader Joe’s was not selling the unsweetened one.)

Even though it is a no-brainer, I would just like to show you a simple instagram-like video of how I blended the drink (Pardon the pixielated video as it was late at night and uploading the video online makes it even worse!):

I hope that all of you will enjoy this healthy breakfast smoothie as I sure did and I am embracing on it to the patients and caregivers in the hospital!! More to come so watch this space!
