Iki Sushi

during greek day 2011, the joyce homies and i made an impromptu decision to head to kitsilano to enjoy the festival. we walked far too much and thus, we decided to head to a nice restaurant to rest during the evening. jackson suggested iki restaurant due to it’s unique taste and so we agreed.

i have always passed by iki restaurant as i frequently take the 99b bus but i have never thought anything much about iki sushi bistro. i found the place beautifully decorated with intricate lighting and displays. the service was too slow though. we waited so long for a sushi dish but i guess good things are worth waiting for, right?

1st picture – the teppan roll was shared between the 7 of us. five of the rolls cost CAN$6, which is not that expensive. the dish comprised of fresh tomatos, cream cheese, pesto and lightly sauteed garnished with olive oil and balsamic soy. this sushi dish is the simplest amongst those that we have ordered but it is still very gratifying to my stomach.

ratings: 3.5/5★

2nd picture – we shared the crispy artichoke roll for CAN$7. the roll itself has crispy pumpkin, marinated artichoke, sundried tomatoes and cream cheese and it is coated with coriander seeds. although this dish is one of the worst sushi dishes that we have ordered, i found it not that bad after all. the crispy artichoke was to die for but i was very irritated by the coriander seeds.

ratings: 2.8/5★

3rd picture - we had the crispy mango roll, which is worth CAN$5. the mango roll had mango obviously and also had ingredients such as salmon and avacado rolled in tempura crisp with blackberry mango sauce. i found this dish very refreshing due to the succulent mango and salmon. it is a rather different kind of sushi roll that people usually have.

ratings: 3/5★

4th picture – we decided to get the pad thai udon as we were still not full from all the sushi rolls. it costs CAN$9, which is pretty steep for a dish that does not have much quantity. however, since quality is the key component, the udon is quite pleasing to the taste buds. it consists of stir fried udon noodle with prawns and tofu in thai style and is topped with fresh green onion, red pepper and dash of lime.

ratings: 3.25/5★

5th picture – just like many girls, we decided to end our night with desserts so we got the matcha brulee for CAN$3.50. i’m someone that love anything matcha so this is definitely a HUGE thumbs up to my matcha list !

ratings: 4.25/5★

6th and 7th pictures – jackson highly recommended the yam fry with home mayo, which costs CAN$4. it has thinly cut tempura strips with balsamic reduction sauce and hollandaise dipping sauce on the side. it was everyone’s ultimate favorite as it was finished as soon as the dish was served. iki restaurant lived up to it’s reputation of serving delicious yam fries !

ratings: 4/5★

8th picture – another ultimate favorite of joyce homies was the avalanche roll, which is worth the CAN$7 proposed.  the dish has sushi rolled with purple yam fries, cream cheese and avocado and it is garnished with purple yam fries, miso hollandaise sauce and crispy bean noodle. it is the most exquisite dish of the lot !!

ratings: 4.75/5★

9th picture - the volcano roll ($6.50) was also done as soon as it was given to us. it was as if we were playing fastest fingers first. well, how can we help it when the dish is simply exquisite? the volcano roll consists of hell roll (spicy tuna and cucumber) with spicy tempura crisp and yam fries.

the bill came up to a total of CAN$54.32 and angel treated us so she paid for more than half of the costs.

in conclusion, this restaurant certainly lives up to expectation as it offers different types of sushi rolls from other sushi places.
