#36 a rare treasure

Posted by swisscheese on December 19, 2010 in burnaby, japanese cuisine, udon |

my father was here awhile ago. that explains the lack of updates. one thing you got to know about my dad is that he is one fussy eater !! he doesn’t like seafood, food that contains MSG and such. he is very particular about so many ingredients such as a crucial one like garlic. since his taste bud is so different from mine, i decided to let athiam (my cousin) choose a restaurant that my father might like. and so, the restaurant is ” hi genki “.

hi genki is a tiny treasure that is located in an old folks home. thus, there are plenty of parking spaces. i was amazed by it’s location and the quality of food they have. the restaurant is pretty neat, i would say ! it was really quiet at 2pm but many friends have told me that the restaurant is usually packed to the brim. the waitress was a very friendly one tho we had to wait for awhile to get a hold of her.

nabeyaki udon – CAN$8.95

i was so surprise that the nabeyaki don also consisted of a bowl of rice because in miu miu sushi, the nabeyaki udon cost almost the same but it doesn’t come with a bowl of rice. it makes no difference to me anyways since there are too much carbohydrate (udon & rice ? you gotta be kidding me) involved. nabeyaki udon consisted of prawn tempura, fish cake and egg as well. it tasted better than the usual nabeyaki udon but i wished i’ve ordered something better (like my cousin’s spicy salmon jan, which was oh-so good !)

banana tempura – CAN$3.95

the banana tempura is like ” pisang goreng ” (deep-fried banana) in singapore except that it’s a lot sweeter. it is topped with strawberry sauce and complimented with 1-2 scoops of vanilla ice cream. i shared it with my cousin and i wished i had more !! the banana was so freshly fried and it tasted especially delicious with the strawberry sauce and ice-cream.

1st pic: tonkatsu hayashi – CAN$8.95
2nd pic: chicken katsu donburi – CAN$6.95
no pic: spicy salmon jan – CAN$7.95

the tonkatsu is breaded fried pork with the house special brown sauce on rice. my father was eating so quickly after his first bite. even though the portion was huge, my father ordered the chicken katsu donburi because he really enjoyed his meal.

my cousin got the spicy salmon jan and he swears by it that it is one gastronomic meal for keeps !

the bill

the total came up to a total of CAN$41.16 but i have forgotten how much my father paid altogether. he’s quite a big tipper, unlike me.

[EDITED]

UPDATED ON: 11TH OF MAY 2011

since john was leaving for a 2 months vacation, annie and i decided to hang out together with him on his last day here. i was thinking of heading to hi genki since it’s a hidden gem and i really wanna try their fried ice cream since they ran out of it the first time i was there with daddy and athiam.

ENTREE

1st picture – i ordered the SALMON KAMA SHIO for CAN$9.95 and i was surprised that the portion was HUGE ! there are so many salmons to consume. it is lightly salted, grilled salmon, which is too oily for my liking. it is well cooked though. the fish tasted fresh but seriously, there were so much oil residues on my lips after eating it. i had to take it to go since it is too big for a meal and i wanna save some space for desserts.

ratings: 2.8/5★

2nd picture – annie had the SAKE CURRY (CAN$8.95). we were so surprised that she had an ENORMOUS portion. her dish is way bigger than mine. sake curry consisted of breaded fried salmon with curry. she enjoyed it a lot and was grateful that i introduced this lovely place to her. she also had to take her dish to go.

3rd picture – john had the HIRE KATSU DON (CAN$7.95). we were tongue-tied when john’s dish is a HUGE contrast to annie and my dish. the dish is just right for 1 person’s portion. apparently, john do not eat as much as other guys that i know. i remember my dad ordering this and when he was not full from it, he ordered another dish to satisfy his stomach. john really like the katsu don and was really thankful to know that this amazing restaurant is just nearby his house.

DESSERTS

1st picture – annie had the KURI ICE (CAN$3.95), which comprised of chestnut and ice cream. it was such a small portion but she found it fine. she wished she had order john and mine though.

2nd picture – john and i had AZUKI IMO ICE (CAN$4.50) each. it had red bean and sweet potato with a scoop of ice cream. i found it too starchy as both the red bean and sweet potato consist of carbohydrate. also, the sweet potato was too hard. thank goodness for the ice cream or the dessert will be too dry.

ratings: 3/5★

I’LL COME BACK TO HI GENKI AGAIN TO TRY THEIR FRIED ICE CREAM FOR ONCE !!!
