oktoberfest movie marathon #2

Posted by swisscheese on October 28, 2010 in adventure, animation, biography, comedy, drama, fantasy, history, movies, mystery, thriller |

i have not been watching movies on telus tuesday since my accident so after 1.5 months of not heading to metrotown, i went to watch 4 movies this month, one of which was when i was still on crutches and the other was when i was still limping. it was truly a good experience climbing up the stairs of the theater in crutches though.

1) life as we know it

what happens when your best friend left you her baby for her inheritance ? i wouldn’t know what will i do under unforeseen circumstances like this but katherine heigl and josh duhamel portrayed their characters very well. ” life as we know it ” is not as dull as ” the switch ” and not as far-fetched as ” knight and day “. even though it has a low rating, it is way better than many of the romantic comedies i have seen this year.

genre: comedy, drama
ratings: 3/5 popcorns

giving credit for being realistic, thumbs up !

Two single adults become caregivers to an orphaned girl when their mutual best friends die in an accident.

Released: Oct 8, 2010

2) buried

seriously, this is the CHEAPEST & the WORST movie i have seen this year. the trailer looked interesting but the movie was totally the opposite. the movie is about a U.S contractor working in iraq but he was knocked out and buried in a coffin. with only a lighter, a cellphone, a few pens and torchlights, he has to find his way out. it is quite ridiculous that the entire movie (which is the length of 95 minutes) is a scene of a man in a coffin trying to get out. he still died in the end. i mean it’s cool that the director is bringing in a new concept such as just having an actor in a location and being in the same scene the entire movie but the story plot is simply crap. i was at the edge of my seat when he was trying to avoid the snake and the sands from burying him but when he finally died at the end, i was furious and felt empty.

genre: drama, mystery, thriller
ratings: 1.5/5 popcorns

being generous with the ratings so thumbs down !

3) the legend of the guardian: the owls of ga ‘hoole

the best animated movie i have seen thus far !! every feature of the character such as the wings and feathers are very specific and detailed. i’m amazed at the how the animation can be so dazzling and such. soren symbolizes the righteous and he portrays someone who will follow his dreams while his rivalry brother represents bitterness and he depicts someone who wants to rule the world even at the risk of his own family.  i feel that even though this is just an animation, i can feel the connection between the movie and the world we are living in right now.  soren is like any humble girl/guy next door wanting to do the right thing while kludd is like a businessman using manipulative methods to earn as much as possible. a truly inspiring movie, indeed !

genre: animation, adventure, fantasy
ratings: 4.5/5 popcorns

this movie definitely deserves all the credits it needs, thumbs UP !

4) the social network

i did not expect anything out of social network. i thought that it would be another documentary of how facebook was created but there were so much hype about it, i decided to watch it even after 3 weeks of the movie being aired. i came out of the theater feeling very impressed by the level of intellect harvard students have. i read the wikipedia of facebook and it’s founders aftermath and am contented that it correlates with the movie. at least, the movie was inaccurate or exaggerated much. the movie is truly brilliant. i cannot imagine the amount of lawsuits mark had to go through to keep facebook (something that ALL of us use daily) going. brilliant is an understatement. this is the BEST movie of the year !

genre: biography, drama, history
ratings: 5/5 popcorns

an EXCELLENT movie not to be missed !
