bubble tea bliss #1

this place has been collecting dust for abit because i’ve so many programs to attend to despite my vacation. the best thing happened when i got baptized just last sunday. i’ve finally let God enter my life after procrastinating for ages. so what better way to celebrate this joyous moment ? let’s have a feast and this time, it’s in the house !

practically everyone in my church loves the avocado mocha in this rundown area even though it is relatively far from their homes. i was very surprised when the name of the place sounded like a medicinal shop. i frequently walked home from 41st avenue and never had a thought of going into the shop because of it’s shabby look. that’s right, i judge restaurant by their appearances at times. who doesn’t ? it wasn’t until jny brought me there the first time that i finally saw some value in the cafe. there were 2 video games and a photo sticker machine for young kids to venture out. the chairs and tables are too old ! i was surprise that it even existed in the place.

it wasn’t until the second time when alex and bram brought me to the cafe that i started ordering what all my church mates have been craving for – avocado mocha. initially, the cashier told us that there was only 1 avocado left. however, she managed to make 3 avocado mocha slush for three of us, inclusive of an extra cup of slush free of charge ! how awesome is there, heh ?

avocado mocha – CAN$4.50

i felt very refreshed after having a sip of the avocado mocha. the avocado and mocha are mixed very well so there is a balance taste of both the fruity and caffeine flavor. the pearls are in good shape as well. it is not as soft as sunflower cafe’s pearls and not as hard as some other taiwanese restaurants’ pearls. oh, i forgot to mention that this is one of the few bubble tea places that actually mixed bubble tea out of fresh fruits, i kid you not !

PAYMENT METHODS: CASH ONLY

my overall ratings are as follows:

ambiance: 3/10 (will definitely take no notice of it if not for word of mouth)
service: 10/10 (great service, willing to give an extra cup free of charge)
food (taste & appearance): 9.5/10 (fresh and filling)
value: 10/10 (price is a factor but i’ll take quality over quantity anytime !)

total: 8.13/10★

in conclusion, visit this cafe for fresh, high quality bubble teas !!

i have been to pearl castle a couple of times but never actually took photos of most of their food. the place is beautifully decorated, just like tea team. it gives you a warm and cozy feeling while dining there. i used to dislike the place because of the attitude of the waitresses. they are so rude when serving you. earlier in 2007, they hired waitresses based on their looks, not so much of capabilities. however, it was only recently that i found a vast improvement in their attitudes.

seafood kimchi hotpot with sliced pork – CAN$8.95

the kimchi hotpot in pearl castle is very filling as the serving size is very big. at other restaurants, the hotpot usually have little ingredients and lots of vermicelli. the hotpot in pearl castle is one that has the most ingredients ever. the kimchi is not authentic and spicy though.

rating: 2.8/5★

fried tofu – CAN$4.95

the fried tofu is really hot and soft inside but dry and crispy at the surface.

rating: 3/5★

my overall ratings are as follows:

ambiance: 7.5/10
service: 6/10
food (taste & appearance): 5.8/10 (average)
value: 6.5/10 (average prices for taiwanese cuisines)

total: 6.45/10★

in conclusion, pearl castle is a nice restaurant to hang out in and the food is just fine.

sunflower has always been one of the bubble tea restaurants that i frequent because it is just opposite joyce station. it is beautifully decorated with the changing of colorful lightings on the walls, flower decorations and such. it’s decorations attract many customers, especially after their renovations. i had their hotpot all you can eat once and loved it but i found their taiwanese ala carte dishes below average.

sesame and taro bubble tea with pearls – CAN$4.50 each

the bubbleteas are just like the ones in bubbleworld but their pearls are a far cry from bubbleworld. it is either too soft or too hard and i’ll try my best to avoid consuming the pearls.

rating: 2.8/5★

cuttlefish balls

pig ears

the cuttlefish balls are fine and yummy to chew but i cannot say the same for the pigs’ ears. it is more tasteless than the pigs’ ears at T&T. the spring onion and parsley on both the cuttlefish balls and pigs’ ears help aid on the tastes though.

rating for cuttlefish balls: 3.5/5★
rating for pigs’ ears:
2/5★

CLOSE TO JOYCE SKYTRAIN STATION

my overall ratings are as follows:

ambiance: 8/10 (spacious area with lots of pretty decorations)
service: 7/10 (a lot of them are nicer to you if you speak mandarin)
food (taste & appearance): 5.3/10 (below average)
value: 5.5/10 (definitely not worth it !)

total: 6.45/10★

in conclusion, visit this restaurant for convenience only.

i have been to sunshine cafe twice. i was disappointed on my first visit there as the chicken nuggets did not taste as authentic as other taiwanese restaurant. the pearls in the bubbletea were also very soft like the ones in sunflower.

however, upon my second visit, i really like the taro bubble tea i ordered. i requested for less sweetness and it is indeed very refreshing and not as saccharine. i did the right thing to not order the pearl.

LOCATED NEAR METROTOWN: @ CRYSTAL MALL

my overall ratings are as follows:

ambiance: 7/10 (huge spaces between tables and not a very crowded restaurant)
service: 5/10 (waitresses remembered my request but service was not much of an impression)
food (taste & appearance): 6/10 (yummy bubble tea, bad food)
value: 6.5/10 (just like any other taiwanese restaurant)

total: 6.13/10★

it was my first time dining at twinkle last month and i was amazed by the amount of stuff they sell and the number of games they have. they have a huge list of bubble teas with innovative names. we stayed there for about 4 hours but we did not even get chased out despite only ordering bubble teas and a few hotdog buns.

bubble teas

japadog replica

games

i had the ” wizard of oz ” (CAN$5++) and it tasted nasty ! it tasted like mint ice tea. i did not manage to finish the entire glass due to it’s bad taste.

inez loves the featured ” twinkle all stars ” (CAN$5++) and she’s always ordering it whenever she’s at twinkle. the star shaped pearls looks really adorable but the i did not like the taste of it.

yongky, kenny and edwin had the replica japadogs and they thought it tasted like crap !

there were plenty of games such as tumble, texas holdom, 21 and UNO. we had a fun time playing different games but the most enjoyable yet longest game was texas holdom. i guess this is the only factor that made me stay at twinkle.

also, twinkle sells stuff such as the plastic fisheye keychains for CAN$10 each.

PAYMENT METHODS: CASH ONLY
my overall ratings are as follows:

ambiance: 9/10 (cozy place to hang out in)
service: 7.5/10 (polite waitresses that do not chase us out)
food (taste & appearance): 3/10 (food and drinks: a total failure)
value: 3/10 (not worth your penny)

total: 5.63/10★

in conclusion, this restaurant is definitely not for dinning but for fun, laughter, peace and joy !
